Commissioner welcomes CETaS report
The Scottish Biometrics Commissioner Dr Brian Plastow has today welcomed a research report published by the Centre for Emerging Technology and Security (CETaS). The report examines ‘The Future of Biometric Technology for Policing and Law Enforcement: Informing UK Regulation’
In welcoming the research, the Commissioner notes that it touches on many important aspects of biometrics in policing and security including the need to ensure that new and emerging technologies are scientifically valid and reliable, observe human rights, deliver public trust, and are subject to independent oversight and sound governance regimes. The Commissioner particularly welcomes the recommendation that any changes to UK biometrics regulation should consider the distinct legal frameworks of devolved administrations to apply a more consistent governance approach and reduce the risk that new measures conflict with separate biometric laws in Scotland or Northern Ireland.
