Commissioner would welcome ICO investigation into DESC.
The Scottish Biometrics Commissioner Dr Brian Plastow has today confirmed that he would welcome an investigation by the UK Information Commissioner (ICO) to establish whether Police Scotland processing law enforcement data (including biometric data) within the Scottish Government funded Digital Evidence Sharing Capability (DESC) is compliant with UK data protection law. This follows a disclosure by Microsoft that it cannot guarantee the sovereignty of policing data hosted in the Azure public cloud. The Commissioner has previously highlighted the risks of unauthorised access and unauthorised disclosure from placing sensitive Scottish policing data, including biometric data in the public cloud.
